Celebrating March

Take a Beer Break This March!

It doesn’t matter how old you are, March will always be synonymous with March Break. But, there’s more to March than the ol’ family station wagon road trip to Myrtle Beach. There are so many days and events to celebrate from the Full Worm Moon to Earth Hour.

And don’t forget that the sap is running too! Canada produces 76% of the world’s maple syrup, so, be a good, upstanding Canadian and pull up a bar stool and enjoy a Maple Butter Tart Ale from Sawdust Brewing Co. or sew your wild oats with a Maple Rush, a husky porter from Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co.

Looking to extend your March Break? Here’s a helpful beer-drinking to-do list:

March 8th, International Women’s Day + Daylight Savings

Raise a glass to the ladies with Elora Brewing Co.’s Lady Friend IPA, with an easy-going 50 IBU count. This lady is a silver medal-winner (Ontario Brewing Awards, 2016), subtle and balanced with a strong backbone (6%).

Want to mix and mingle with a few Dirty Blondes, Reds and Brunettes? Port Perry’s Old Flame Brewing Co. has a playful line-up of Kellerbier, Vienna Lagers and Munich Dunkels. If you’re looking for a night with No Regrets, you can order that too. This super light low-cal lager weighs in at 2.9%, and with only 100 calories per 355ml serving, you’ll be in bikini or Speedo shape in no time.

March 9th, Full Worm Moon

The first full moon of warmer temps and softer ground is also the time when worms and patio chairs begin to resurface. This moon will also be a super moon! The best way to commemorate warmer days and worms, would be with a worm’s natural pick—an Apple Blossom Honey Brown from Bad Apple Brewing Co. in Bluewater, Ontario. Inadvertently, you’re employing several hundred bees from R&R Honey who help sweeten this beer each spring.

March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day

Purists will turn up their noses at the onslaught of green beers for good reason. Guinness is the appropriate curriculum, but, if you’re looking for a new stout friend, Milk Run Stout by Northwinds Brewery in Collingwood is a solid contender. Potent with Ashanti Estate Coffee and laced with lactose sugar, this stout is an easy starter or ender.

If you’re seeking your own pot of gold, Left Field Brewing’s Goldpanner delivers. The smoked black lager is dark and roasty and will transport you to a peat fire in Tipperary. *Warning: You might be caught saying, “Kiss me, I’m Irish,” under the influence of this one.

March 19th, First Day of Spring

This one is a no-brainer. Seaforth’s Half Hours On Earth coincidentally brewed the perfect beer for this monumental day. Day In Day Out Day In Day Out is a 7.2% Sour Black IPA with…wait for it…Cabernet Sauvignon rape juice, lavender, Madagascar vanilla and milk sugar. It’s like a picnic in a can!

March 28th, Earth Hour

From 8:30-9:30pm, reduce your carbon footprint by putting up your feet and drinking a feel-good, environmentally responsible beer. Cowbell Brewing Company in Blyth is the first closed-loop, carbon neutral brewery in North America! In collaboration with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, 17,000 native trees and pollinator species have been planted as part of a 28-acre reforestation project. Raise a #025 Mango Hazy IPA to Cowbell and the earth!
